Mississippi Heroes Seeks Donations to Build Wheelchair Ramp for Two Louisiana Children Battling Rare Diseases
Mississippi Heroes, partnering with LikeMinded Ladies NOLA, is expanding its mission and seeks donations to finish a wheelchair ramp for two Louisiana children.
We believe every family—no matter where they live—deserves safe access at home. This is just the first step in growing our impact across the region.”
GULFPORT, MS, UNITED STATES, November 26, 2025 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Mississippi Heroes, a Gulf Coast nonprofit dedicated to building wheelchair ramps and recognizing caregivers across the state, is expanding its mission across state lines to answer a heartfelt call from Louisiana. The organization has been asked to build a wheelchair ramp for a young Louisiana couple whose two children have a rare, debilitating diseases. The family, facing overwhelming medical challenges and limited mobility access at home, reached out for a safe solution that would allow their children to enter and exit their home with dignity and ease.— Katherine Sutton, Executive Director of Mississippi Heroes
The two Louisiana children are Mattie and Mary Lala of St. Bernard Parish. Both sisters are living with Hurler Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that's robbing them of mobility one day at a time. Mattie, 10, struggles to climb stairs now due to hip weakness. Mary, 6, has already survived a stroke and will soon need hip surgery. Both girls are losing their ability to walk independently, and their family's home has steps they can't navigate much longer. “This request touched our hearts deeply,” said Katherine Sutton, Founder of Mississippi Heroes. “Our mission has always been to honor caregivers and remove barriers for seniors, veterans, and individuals with disabilities. When we learned about this family’s situation, we knew we had to step in—state lines don’t stop compassion.”
To support this expansion into Louisiana, Mississippi Heroes is partnering with LikeMinded Ladies NOLA, a community-driven women’s organization known for empowering families and fostering support networks throughout the New Orleans region. Together, the two groups will fund, organize, and complete the ramp build, combining resources and volunteers to uplift a family that desperately needs hope. Sutton said she was so grateful to President, Laila Morcos-Zissis and team for helping make this happen.
“We are honored to work alongside Mississippi Heroes,” said Ty Salvant, of LikeMinded Ladies NOLA. “Our communities are stronger when we show up for one another. This partnership represents exactly who we are—women helping families, caregivers, and neighbors in their hardest moments.”
Mississippi Heroes currently builds two ramps per week across Mississippi and has completed ramps for seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities. This Louisiana project marks the beginning of a larger vision: expanding the nonprofit’s caregiver-support mission into additional Gulf Coast states.
“We believe every family—no matter where they live—deserves safe access at home,” Sutton says. “This is just the first step in growing our impact across the region.”
